Why have permanent magnet synchronous motors become the preferred choice for electric vehicles?

Subordinate Classification:Industry NewsRelease Time:2026-02-03
In the core powertrain systems of electric vehicles, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are gradually becoming the mainstream technology. Their core advantages lie in their high efficiency and excellent power density.

PMSMs generate their magnetic field using permanent magnets in the rotor, eliminating the need for electrical excitation and thus reducing energy loss, resulting in extremely high efficiency. Especially in urban driving conditions with frequent start-stop cycles, their high low-speed torque allows for faster and smoother vehicle acceleration.

In contrast, while asynchronous induction motors offer excellent performance at high speeds and are less expensive, their overall energy efficiency is slightly lower. Therefore, most electric vehicle manufacturers currently tend to adopt PMSM solutions that balance performance and range, or combine both types of motors on the front and rear axles to leverage their respective advantages.

With advancements in materials and control technologies, the performance boundaries of motors continue to expand, driving continuous innovation in the electric mobility experience.
